John was born in Sheffield in 1853. As a schoolboy, John, who was known as "John" to his friends, sold kippers on street corners to supplement his widowed mother's income. At the age of 14 he began making fanzines and selling them in public houses. In 1870 he bought a handcart for £3.10s and had it painted and signwritten at a cost of 16s. He sold fanzines from the handcart for many years. When John was making his fanzines and friends called, he would shout - "Come back later, I'm-a-making my fanzines." In 1949 the family bible was passed on to me, his grandson, and we discovered this fanzine hidden in the cover of the bible in 1984. We decided to reproduce his handcart and sell his lovely fanzines, just like he used to do. Good old John! Great Grandson, L. John inc. |
